One way to keep your community safer. Give your Police officers more time to do things that just need to be done. Which of the things an officer is supposed to do is the most important. We mostly send them when people are in trouble. They often can arrive before ambulances or fire departments. We love this. But if they are doing paperwork or waiting for the guys to prove if a person is on drugs or alcohol then they cannot be out doing other things that are needed.
Recently there has been thoughts to defund the police. What should be happening is giving them tools to make us safer and let them do the job in protecting the public by begin out in the public.
So many calls that are important but just take time. Lost children or theft is important to followup on. These take time. Sometimes small theft is not handled well because the officer is called to a more pressing item.
Beat the ambulance or fire departments to accidents.
When an officer gets to an accident the first thing to do is make sure everyone is taken care of and no more people get hurt. Including the ambulance and fire fighters.
Then an officer might need to see if the accident was caused by someone who is DUI. In some cases this is difficult because people can be in shock. An officer might read a situation wrong. These are really hard calls an officer needs to make. He might be worried that a person was not DUI. If he takes the person in then the department can have legal issues. So there might be time when an officer is not sure so he lets the person go.
If an officer has to take a person back to the station to get a urine or blood test to prove they were DUI this can take hours. Those in this condition can be hard to handle and not want to give blood or give you Urine. Being able to test on the spot with saliva changes so many things. The officer has a ton of confidence that a person is or is not under the influence. The officer knows it before he takes the person in. He may not even need to take a person in. The saliva test is validated in a lab so that it holds up in court.
It is much safer than having to draw blood or test urine.
Literally using a saliva test to show if a person is under the influence of drugs or alcohol can save officers hours and therefore let them be helping win in many other ways.
